I frequently purchase large burls. Depending on the size, shape, harvested condition (ant/termite damage or amount of trunk), or customer needs/requests, I will slab burl caps vertically on my bandsaw. With my Laguna LT24, I have the ability to slab up to 24" diameter burls. I've also used the services of a local sawyer to slab burls up to just over 30". Larger and/or very heavy burls - up to 48" diameter - I've had slabbed at a mill with a 67" Wood-Mizer at the rate of $300/hour. If you purchase a whole burl cap and want it slabbed, I'd be happy to do so free of charge (within reason) if I'm capable of doing so on my bandsaw.
